Many women have dreamt about their dream wedding and proposal. I can say that I am one of those women. I’ve always wondered how I would be proposed to. I’ve also wondered what kind of wedding I would have, etc. My proposal was nothing like I dreamed it would be but I wouldn’t change a thing about it, Here’s why…
My Plans.
Growing up, I used to think I’d be married by 24 and already working on my second child by 26. Little did I know, God had other plans. I was 26, unmarried and with no children. My boyfriend and I had been dating for a little over a year and had plans to move in together. We talked a lot about our future together and what that looked like. To be completely honest, I had a strong feeling he would propose eventually but I wasn’t quite sure when. After we were together a year, I started noticing him acting a little strange. I would catch him awkwardly staring at my ring finger and trying my rings on. I had a feeling he was up to something but I didn’t have any concrete evidence. That was until I received a weird text from him one day.
A Text I’ll Save Forever.
Let me start by saying that my fiancé is the absolute worst at keeping secrets! Anyone who knows him can attest to that. Also, anyone that knows me knows that I hate surprises. I was that kid who knew what every single one of her Christmas gifts was. I’m just not a surprise kind of person. So true to ourselves my proposal was no secret.
I was at work one day, having my daily conversation with one of my older sisters. While talking to her, I noticed that my fiancé, then boyfriend, sent me a text. We were just on the phone so I figured he forgot something and decided to just text me. When I opened up the message, my mouth dropped and I was at a lost for words. All I kept saying was “OH MY GOD!”. Finally, I managed to tell my sister that I was pretty sure that he sent me the text by accident. Little did I know, he actually meant to send that text to my sister instead.
His Mistake Worked Out.
After realizing that he screwed up he tried to cover up his mistake. He messaged me back saying that he was in the mall and decided to stop and look at rings for the future. He added that he sent me a picture of the ring to see if I liked it. The ring was very nice but I was not in love with it. So to that, I responded with a picture of a ring that I really loved. This was a ring that I had saved to my vision board at the beginning of the year.
Let me say that I, in no way, ever pressured my fiancé into proposing, I just let him know that marriage was important to me as well as having a family.
I Knew It.
Needless to say, after I received that text I was pretty sure that a proposal was going to happen very soon. My fiancé isn’t only bad at keeping secrets he is also horrible at lying, so I didn’t believe his story. I knew he sent that text by mistake but I was going to go along with it. There were other things that were starting to add up that confirmed to me that a proposal was in the near future.
The Proposal
There is a saying that goes something like “we make plans and God laughs”, well my fiancé learned that. He had planned on this grand proposal but things happened and plans changed. The proposal was supposed to take place at his graduation, on stage, in front of thousands of people. I have always said I wanted an intimate proposal, and that would’ve been the opposite. Plus, the day of his graduation it was pouring rain and freezing cold. Let me explain how I looked sitting in the crowd. His mom bought me a school sweater since it was freezing. His aunt let me borrow her shall, and his grandmother had given me a pair of socks. I say all of that to say, I would not have been camera ready. I probably would have passed out from pure embarrassment. Thank god for mother nature because he had to change his plans and wound up proposing that night at dinner, with our family around. It was perfect, I couldn’t have asked for anything better.
